Cyndi's List

Pretty well the ultimate in Links Pages. Unlike this page Cyndi's links are organised into about a hundred categories and cross-referenced. It's tempting to say that if it ain't here it doesn't exist, but that's a slight exaggeration.

Gendex

What Cyndi does for genealogy sites, this does for genealogy data-bases. Hundreds of web wide data-bases which contain the data you might need and, you can locate and view the data in Gendex without having to go off and access them directly.

Tutorials

Family Tree Maker

Loads of "how to do it" articles. Many of them based on the United States. An online Unversity on beginning genealogy and majoring on Internet genealogy has much to offer to everyone world wide looking for classes that can be browsed at your own pace. There is also an excellent huge index of Internet based resources.

Rootsweb

For my money the RootsWeb tutorial is unbeatable. And it's free of course.
The last time I looked there were over 20 lessons in the tutorial and they were excellent, well constructed, up to date lessons which could be used by the raw beginner as well as the more advanced researcher.

Genuki

The Genealogy site for the UK and Ireland. If you're looking for sources ref. the UK start here. Personally I find it slightly difficult to navigate this site, but another researcher tells me that he finds it easy. All I can say is try it.

All The Rest

This page would be extremely remiss to ignore the International Genealogical Index or IGI. The LDS church has photographed, copied and indexed registers from many countries, particularly the Parish Registers of many parishes in the United Kingdom. These have been indexed, microfilmed and microfeiched and made available at their genealogy centres all over the world, but now it is available on the WEB. Don't forget though, it is only an index and does not list all extremely useful bits from these registers.
The same organisation has made the Personal Ancestry File or PAF available. This is a family history file program, for storing and retrieving your genealogy on your computer. I have never used it but my sister swears by it. I believe it is still a freeware program I prefer Brother's Keeper a shareware program, which is very cheap to register and registration does allow you to download upgrades.
