Alice Barwise of Dryholme in Holme Cultram; proved, 1586 Photocopy
"In the name of God Amen. The 26th day of October Anno. Dom. 1586. I Alice Barwis of Dryholm within the parish of Holm being sick in body but whole in mind and perfect in remembrance set forth this my last will and testament in manner as followeth.
First I give my soul to almighty God my maker and redeemer & my body to be buried in the parish church aforesaid.
Item: I give unto William Barwis my son four oxen, four kine, four young cattle, two *, one pot, one pan, two forks, a new wineing cloth, one new cowcloth, two heavy sheets and one * sheet in consideration of his whole portion of goods and beside this I have left the said William a tenement in value worth one hundred Marks the which I think it a better portion than will remain for my son Robert considering the debts * paid charged withall.
Item: I give to Robert Syme one guinea.
Item: I give to my sister Ann my best coat.
Item: I give to Janet Langcake my next best coat and cloak, one guinea and forty shillings which her father my brother is owing to me.
Item: I give to John Barwis the * (?agg) which he desired.
Item: I give to Alice Barwis my best coat except two.
The rest of all my goods moveable and unmoveable my debts being paid and my funeral expenses discharged I give unto Robert Barwis my son whom I do make my executor.
Witnesse hereof: William Hyme jnr., James Symkin jnr., Anthony Haton jnr., Thomas Tremill jnr., William Doughtie jnr with others."
The inventory accompanying this will, dated the 24th November 1586, mentions Robert Barwis senior and Junior either as owing or being owed money.
