"In the name of God Amen. In the year of our Lord 1578 the 12th day of June. I Hugh Barwis of the parish of Holm Cultram being sick in body but of * remembrance do ordain and set forth this my last will and testament in manner and form following.
First I give my soul to almighty God my maker and redeemer and my body to be buried in the parish churchyard aforesaid.
Then I will that my mother do pay all my duties and funeral expenses due unto the church for me to be paid.
Item: I will that my mother * the bringing up of my son John and the occupation of my farm * until my son come to * years * that she will be good unto them all.
Item: I give unto my son John all * goods as my father did give unto me by * (this last inserted) by his last will the which goods * at * in my mothers hands.
Item: I do give to Ann my wife and to Alice my daughter the rest of all my goods my debts being paid whom I do make my sole and lawful executors.
Item: I will that if my wife be with child at this present that upon this child shall one of my executors and if my son John die without issue of the male kind lawfully begotten of his body I will that that child the which my wife is now with * my farmhold and all such goods as I gave unto my son John if it be of the male kind and not to be one of my executors and if that child die without a son lawfully begotten of his body I will that my brother Robert should have my farmhold and if he dies without a son lawfully begotten of his body I will that my brother William shall have it and if he dies without a son lawfully begotten of his body I give it to my daughter Alice and she to marry one of mine own name. Also I give to Ann my wife and to Alice my daughter all my child’s portion of goods which as yet remaineth in my mother’s hands which goods is being due unto me being one of my father’s executors.
Item: I will that my wife and her children shall keep house with my mother trusting that my mother will be good unto them and if she be not good unto them I will that they and all their goods with the occupation of my farmhold do * at the discretion of my friends whom I power both in * and according to the custom of the kinship also I will that Mr. Richard Barwis jnr. Edward Musgrave younger, Robert Chamber younger, Thomas Langcake my uncle, Robert Barwis my brother be governors of my wife and children and * of this my last will and testament trusting that they will * and cause all things to be done for the most profit to my wife and children according to the custom of the lordship.
