Heugh Barwis of Sowterfield, Holme Cultram; proved, 1634

"In the name of God Amen. The 31st day of August Anno Dom. 1634. I Hugh Barwis of Souterfield in the parish of Holm Cultram sick in body but of perfect remembrance praised be God do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following.

First and principally I commend my soul into the hands of almighty God my only maker and redeemer and my body to be buried within the parish church of Holm aforesaid.

Item: I give and bequeath unto Janet Barwis my wife one cupboard and all my fine vessels and pewter vessels.

Item: I give unto my brother Robert Barwis one grey nag.

Item: I give unto James Barwis my brother two stotts of two years old, the one hawked and the other black, and six bushels of corn, two bushels of bigg and four bushels of oats.

Item: I give unto Mabel Wilkinson my servant two grimmer (?) hogs.

Item: I give unto Alice Snaiton a bushel of bigg.

The rest of all my goods & chattels moveable and unmoveable my debts * and funeral expenses discharged I give and bequeath unto John Barwis my son whom I make my sole executor of this my last will and testament.
