Isaac Barwise, Yeoman, Longthwaite, Wigton Proved 1796

"In the name of God, Amen. I Isaac Barwise of Longthwaite in the parish of Wigton in the county of Cumberland, yeoman, calling to mind the uncertainty of this transitory life and the certainty of death do with divine permission make and publish this my last will and testament trusting through the merits of my blessed redeemer to have remission of all sins. And as to the settling all such temporal estate as it hath pleased almighty God to bless me with.

I give and bequeath unto my friends Mungo Simpson of Bewaldeth in the said county of Cumberland, yeoman, and John Lamonby of Caldewlees in the said county, yeoman, and the survivor of them and to the heirs executors and administrators of such survivor all my customary messuage and tenement situate lying and being at Wigton in the said county of Cumberland held under Sir Frederick Fletcher Vane Baronet & Lord thereof by payment of the customary rent of seven shillings and five pence (which I lately surrendered into the hands of the said Lord in order that Robert Wilkinson of High Longthwaite aforesaid yeoman might be admitted tenant in trust thereof). To hold to them the said Mungo Simpson and John Lamonby and the survivor of them and to the heirs executors and administrators of such survivor according to the custom of the said manor and that they the said Mungo Simpson and John Lamonby do and shall with all convenient speed after my decease raise out of my said customary messuages lands and tenements aforesaid by sale or mortgage of the same (save and except the four new erected dwelling houses fronting the church now in possession of Susanna Skelton Hannah Wilson Barbara Wood Mrs. Blain Robert Wilson Jeremiah Richardson and others together with the gardens adjoining the same on the south and east thereof) that is to say the sum of four hundred pounds which I hereby order and direct my said trustees and the survivor of them and the executors and administrators of such survivors to pay and apply the same as follows that is to say and apply the interest of the said sum of four hundred pounds unto my daughter Molly Dowthwaite (wife of Joseph Dowthwaite) for and during the term of her natural life by two equal half yearly payments in each and every year during the term of her natural life the first payment thereof to begin and be made at the end of six months next after my decease to be paid to her own hand and receipt alone to be a good and sufficient discharge for the same notwithstanding her coverture. And not to be under the control or direction of her said husband or any other future taking husband in any respect whatsoever.

And from and after the decease of my said daughter Molly Dowthwaite I give and bequeath the said sum of four hundred pounds unto my said trustees and the survivor of them and the heirs executors and administrators of such survivor do and shall pay and apply the sum of one hundred pounds part thereof unto my two granddaughters Sarah and Ann Dowthwaite equally to be divided between them share and share alike when they respectively attain the age of twenty five years. Until which time I order and direct my said trustees to pay and apply the interest thereof from and after the decease of my said daughter Molly Dowthwaite equally between them until they attain to their respective ages of twenty five years aforesaid.

Also I give and bequeath the sum of three hundred pounds (the residue and remainder of the said sum of four hundred pounds) and the interest thereof unto my son Joseph Barwise from and after the decease of my said daughter Molly Dowthwaite.

Also I give and bequeath unto my daughter in law Catherine the wife of my son Joseph the four new houses herein before mentioned now in the possession of the said Susanna Skelton Hannah Wilson Barbara Wood Mrs. Blain Robert Wilson Jeremiah Richardson and others for and during the term of her natural life and to be by her entered upon immediately after my decease. And from and immediately after the decease of my daughter in law I give devise and bequeath the said four messuages or dwelling houses unto my four grandchildren Isaac Jane Hetherington and John Barwise, children of my said son Joseph and their heirs and assigns forever according to the custom of the said manor and I hereby order my said tenant in trust Robert Wilkinson and his heirs to surrender the same according to the directions of my said trustees and the survivor of them and the heirs of such survivor according to the true intent and meaning of this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say:

The west end share to Isaac Barwise and his heirs.

The next share to Jane Barwise and her heirs.

The next to Hetherington Barwise and his heirs.

And to John Barwise the next and easter most share.

And I also give and bequeath unto my daughter Molly Dowthwaite all my household furniture (except fixtures such as are nail fast to the walls).

Also I give and bequeath unto my said two trustees the sum of ten pounds each for their trouble in the execution of the trust hereby reposed in them.

All the rest residue and remainder of my personal estate and effects I give and bequeath unto my said trustees upon trust to pay off and discharge my funeral expenses and just debts and if any surplus shall happen to remain after the same shall be fully paid off and discharged the said surplus I give and bequeath to my son Joseph Barwise.

And I hereby nominate constitute and appoint the said Mungo Simpson and John Lamonby joint executors of this my last will and testament.
