John Barwise of the parish of Holme Cultram, proved, 1570

"In the name of God Amen. The 30th day of September in the year of our Lord 1570. I John Barwis of whole mind in good remembrance make this my last will & testament as hereafter followeth.

First I give my soul to almighty God my creator and redeemer & my body to be buried in my parish churchyard of Holm (Cultram).

Item: my debts and duties paid according to the law

Item: I set * at a side to my * bringing at a * * to her X00 s a cow and six sheep.

Item: I give to Janet my sister a * & two ewes

Item: I give to William my brother a *

Item: I give to Thomas Gyll two * lambs

Item: I give to Hugh Barwis a * lamb

Item: Residue of all my goods after my debts paid and my body honestly brought to the ground I give to Robert Barwis my uncle whom I make my sole executor.

Witnesses: Anthony Syms, Thomas Morason, Anne Barwis, Margaret Best and Anne Chalynor and others."

Note – two copies of this will appear to exist in the CRO probate archive, one is listed as of John Barwes, and this has an inventory with it, completed on the 25th of October, when John Barwes was "Lately deceased"; this was proved on the 25th May 1751. The second copy is listed as of John Barwise, and as proved in 1570, though no date of proof is given on the will itself. The text is otherwise essentially identical.
