Robert Barwes of Swinsty in Holme Cultram; proved, 1590

"In the name of God Amen. The 11th day of September Anno Dom 1590. I Robert Barwis of Swinsty within the parish of Holm being sick in body but whole in mind and perfect in remembrance praised be God do ordain and set forth this my last will and testament in manner as followeth.

First I give my soul to almighty God my maker and redeemer & my body to be buried in the parish church aforesaid.

Item: I give to Janet my wife the third part of all my goods according to the * of the * * to my said wife I leave the third of my lands and tenements lying in the town and * of Langrigg to have and behold * and behoof during her widowed state.

Item: I give to Magdalene Barwis my son John his daughter all that my messuage and tenement and farmhouse with the appurtenances * lying and being within the town and * of Little Barton of the yearly rent of five shillings to have and to hold the said messuage and farmhold with all and singular the appurtenance to her the said Magdalene Barwis and her heirs to the * * of her the said Magdalene & her heirs forever.

Item: I give the said Magdalene six bushels of bigg, six bushels of * and one cow which I will shall be delivered unto her at * time as she shall enter to the occupation of her tenement in Swinsty.

Item: I do give to George Auston three sons fifteen shillings to be equally divided amongst them.

Item: I give to Marion (?) Barwis * * *

Item: I give to John Voack three children three shillings.

Item: I give to Thomas Studholm children three shillings, to Robert Barwis child 12 shillings, to Richard Barwis child 12 shillings.

Item: to Robert my son his daughter one cow which I had of John Stevenson.

The rest of all my goods & chattels moveable and unmoveable my dabts paid and my funeral expenses discharged I give to Thomas Barwis my son whom I do make and constitute my sole and lawful executor.

Item: I do declare by this my last will and testament that Robert Barwis my son hath had his portion of my goods already and therefore my will is that he shall have no more after my death as for such debts as he is owing to me I do forgive them unto him.
