Stephen Barwis of Holm Cultram Parish; proved, 1614
"In the name of God Amen. The 19th day of February Ann. Dom. 1613. I Stephen Barwis of Edderside in the parish of Holm Cultram sick in body but of perfect remembrance praised be God do ordain and set forth this my last will and testament in manner and form following.
First and principally I commend my soul unto almighty God my only saviour and redeemer and my body to be buried within the parish churchyard of Holm aforesaid.
Item: I give and bequeath unto Alice daughter of John Waite of Old Mawbrey two oxen, two * of three years old, three kine, one gun (?), four ewes and their lambs, six hogs and one cupboard.
Item: I give and bequeath unto Alice the wife of the said Jo Waite one chest.
Item: I give and bequeath unto every one of the said Jo: Waite’s children one ewe.
Item: I give and bequeath unto every one of Thomas Langcake’s children of Foulsike one ewe (This last crossed out).
Item: I give and bequeath unto William Austen my son in law two oxen which he hath in his possession and two bushels of bigg.
Item: I give and bequeath unto Janet, wife of the said William, one chest standing in the chamber with a half lid.
Item: I give and bequeath unto John son of the said William Austen one ewe and one hog.
Item: I give and bequeath unto Janet my wife two of my best oxen, two of the best brass pots, one cupboard standing in my dwelling house and one chest.
Item: I give and bequeath unto Alice Hewett four ewes and their lambs and one cow all of which I will shall be delivered at Whitsuntide next following.
Item: I give and bequeath unto Anthony Barwis my godson one of the best *.
Item: I give and bequeath unto Jo Richardson * (torn) in law two * which he hath in his possession.
Item: I give and bequeath unto Thomas son of Jo Syme of Edderside 21s of English money which money I will * the said Jo Syme his father or some other friend shall at Whitsuntide next bestow in some goods for the * * * of the child Thomas Syme.
Item: I give and bequeath unto Jo Shaw one chest that was his father’s.
Item: Whereas the said John Shaw hath twenty-two pounds of lawful English money due unto him by the last will and testament of Jo Shaw his deceased father as by the said will moved at law appeareth a * pounds * is and remaineth in the hands of B*(torn) Tyffin of Tarnes **** (badly torn) pounds in mine own * for the * payment * * will * * Jo Richardson my son in law * full content and pay unto the said Jo Shaw * * * according unto the * * of Jo: Shaw his deceased father’s last will and testament.
Item: I give unto every one of Thomas Langcake’s children of Foulsike one ewe.
The rest of all my goods and chattels moveable and unmoveable my debts * and funeral expenses discharged I give and bequeath unto John Richardson, Thomas Langcake, John Waite and William Austen my sons in law whom I do make my sole executors.
