Thomas Barwise of the Parish of Holme Cultram; proved, 1580

"In the name of God Amen. Anno Dom. 1580, the 18th day of January. I Thomas Barwis within the parish of Holm Cultram being sick in body but whole in mind and perfect in remembrance praised be God do ordain and set forth this my last will and testament in manner as followeth.

First I give my soul to almighty God my maker and my body to be buried in the parish churchyard aforesaid.

Item: I give to Ann Hodgson one * a * and a *

The rest of all my goods my debts being paid and my funeral expenses discharged I give unto Janet my wife and to Janet Barwis my daughter whom I do make my true and lawful executrices.

Witnesses: Robert Tyndall, Robert Saull, Robert Barnes jnr., John Hewat, John Voake jnr., with others."

From the rental of 1570, Janet Barwis held a tenement in Mawbraykirk. She had as neighbours, John Saul and John Hewet, and near by in New Mawbray, Robert Tyndall and John Barne. It seems likely, therefore, that this is the wife Janet referred to in this will.
